Worldwide some 140 million people officially use Russian and 120 million have it as their second language.
If you speak Russian, you can communicate in several countries, since it is the official language of Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Also, on the border with Asian countries like China it is also used as a business language.

But you can use Russian not only for personal communication, since it is also be very useful in the virtual world. Russian is one of the most used languages on the Internet. According to some researches (and depending on when the data was taken) it is the second most used language on the Internet, only after English. 6% of all websites in the world are in Russian. For example, only 3,3 % of the Internet community uses Chinese and China’s population is nine times that of Russia. And you will not feel alone speaking Russian, since Russia is the sixth country in the world by Internet users. Another interesting fact is that 25 % of the world's scientific literature is published in Russian.
No, we are not referring to wealthy Russians with expensive cars and who shop at luxury stores. We are talking about the power centers of the world. Russian is one of the few official languages used in the world's most significant institutions. It is an official language in the UN (United Nations), the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) or the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization). All these organizations have something in common, a great political power just as much as economic. For example, the SCO is one of the largest commercial organizations in China, all of which include Russian as an official language. An interesting fact about the growing importance of Russian is that the official NATO website has a Russian version.

Throughout history, there have been different languages that have marked the commercial and cultural exchanges in various parts of the world. For over a thousand years, much of Europe and the world used Latin. At another point in history, French became widely spoken, especially after the revolution of 1789. One century later, English became the world language, reached its greatest moment after World War II and it is still the most used language in business.
But in recent years, other languages have begun to overcome English in different areas. Some of those languages are German, Chinese and Russian. Russia is the largest exporter of natural gas, oil and diamonds in the world. It is also a global leader in the space industry, aviation and weapons technology. Russia is the largest country in the world, making it the leader in the trade of different natural resources. Furthermore, this country is a constant source of intellectual, cultural and economic knowledge. All this makes Russian a key language in different areas.
And when it is time for leisure, Russian is also a major language. Russia is the second country in the world in tourism by number of tourists and money spent, second only to Chinese tourists. According to the World Bank, in 2012 Russian tourists spent about 48,000 million dollars in their countries of destination, and its growth rate exceeds 20% per year. This means that today, Russian is also an essential language in tourist areas around the world.
